Hidden in this chaotically colorful painting is the water spirit Sirena. She is a legend shared across the Filipino, Spanish, and Chamorro cultures. Part fish, part human, and a symbol of enchantment and danger, her hybrid nature keeps her tied to the water where she swims around and causes mischief for the sailors. When communing with the cosmos, Sirena is my proxy, a symbol of hybridity. She understands the multicultural experience and recognizes that home to a Mestiza can feel paradoxical, a constant sense of being a fish out of water.
